ANZUS PACT

Sir,—lf America followed Great Britain’s example by recognising China the war in Korea would end tomorrow: and if she evacuated Formosa, which is as much a part of China as the Isle of Wight is of England, China might believe that she meant friendship. British statesmen have advised America to do both; first, as a gesture of peace, and second, to persuade China that the West is not her implacable enemy. New Zealand should have declined inclusion in the Anzus Council, pending America’s recognition of China and her withdrawal from Formosa, and then insisted that China and Japan be included in the Anzus Council. At present America is hated throughout the East because of blundeting diplomacy and aggression. To ally ourselves with such a predatory Power is dangerous, especially because it weakens the unity of the British Commonwealth, which is the greatest force for peace on earth today.—Yours, etc., STANLEY YOUNG. October 6, 1952.
