LIMITATION OF FAMILIES
Sir,—What obsolete ideas “Catholic” has regarding family .limitation. In our knowledgeable age it is not. needful to deny or subdue natural instincts, though self-control is esteemed, not disparaged. Intelligent couples do not permit children to be conceived, for whom they cannot amply provide. Obviously, unless birth control is speedily brought to overpopulated, starving Indian and Asiatic peoples, devastating war will be inevitable. Actually children are in the highest intelligence group when there is only one or two of them in a family (see statistics in that vitally important and. comprehensive book “Human Fertility,” by an eminent American genetic scientist). Large families, in the low income group, are generally only halfeducated, as older children, are kept from school to help with younger members. When these adolescents go into the world, they are invariably incompetent, and not amenable to discipline.—Yours, etc., MOTHER. October 6, 1952.
