ASSAULT OF POLICE CONSTABLES
YOUNG MAN FINED AT RANGIORA A man whose name was ordered to be suppressed ' was charged before Messrs J. A. Ivory and L. D. J. Smith. Justices of the Peace, in the Magistrate’s Court at Rangiora on Saturday with fighting in a public place and assaulting the police, on February 29. On the first charge he was convicted and fined £2. For assaulting the police constables he was convicted and fined £5. Sergeant T. Mathews said that when •Constables J. B. Gott and A. J: Buckley were patrolling in Victoria street shortly before midnight on February 29. they found two young men fighting in the street. When one was spoken to by the police officers he assaulted them. He was immediately arrested and brought to the police station after some difficulty. This type of offence was liable to a fine of £2O or three month’s imprisonment, said Sergeant Mathews. The accused was warned that if such an offence occurred again it would mean imprisonment. It was only because he had not been before the Court before that he was not being more severely dealt with.
