STANDARDS IN INDUSTRY

VISIT OF U.S. OFFICIAL (New Zealand Press - Association) WELLINGTON. March 3.

“Standards, properly applied, are highly beneficial and necessary to the economy and social life of any country,” said the technical director and assistant secretary of the American Standards Association (Mr C. Ainsworth) at a press conference to-day. Mr Ainsworth recently attended a safety conference in Calcutta conducted by the International Labour Office at the request of the Indian Government. and came to New Zealand at the request of his board of directors.

Mr Ainsworth said that the day was coming when standards would apply both to imports and exports between countries. The American Standards Association, which was not a Government organisation, though strongly supportled by the Federal Bureau of Standards and Government agencies, standardised the standards of 110 trade organisations. which ensured the quality and uniformity of their products. Standards were eminently desirable in consumer as well as technical goods, said Mr Ainsworth. There still were not enough people educated to the benefits of standards. Opposition was always faced for a beginning from certain manufacturers, but standardisation had made tremendous strides in America.
