ONE-DAY STRIKE BY MINERS
WAGES DISPUTE AT WALL*SEND
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, September 11. To prptest against the alleged victimisation of two workers, Wallsend State miners to-day staged a one-day strike. A similar strike was held at Wallsend three weeks ago. The trouble has occurred as a result of a dispute over the two workers’ wages. These men claim that they are receiving only half their prestrike wages for the same work.
The secretary of the Wallsend State Miners’ Union (Mr R. Ross) said members of the union had considered at a meeting this morning that it was a case of victimisation, and when the meeting ended at 10.30 a.m. they went home for the day in protest. Work will be resumed to-morrow.
The manager of the mine (Mr J. Cunningham) said this afternoon that he would not comment on Mr Ross’s statement.
