MISS HART REACHES SEMIFINALS
(Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK. Sept. 1. Miss Doris Hart, who won the Wimbledon singles title in July, advanced nearer to her ambition to win the United States women’s lawn tennis singles championship by beating Miss Nancy Chaffee in a quarter-final to-day. f Miss Hart was superior in all departments to her younger opponent, and won with a great deal in reserve. By a brilliant display of all-round tennis, Mrs Jean Walker-Smith. Britain's leading woman player, stormed into the semi-finals of the women's championship when she beat Mrs Rurac, formerly of Rumania, and now of the United States. Herbert Flam was eliminated from the men’s championship in the quarterfinals to-day. Victor Seixas beat Flam in a match which went to five sets. There was little difference in the players’ standards, but Seixas lasted a little better and remained steadier in crises. Results:— Men’s singles:—Quarter-finals, Dick Savitt beat Budge Patty. 6-3, 1-6, 4-6, 6-1. 6-4; Victor Seixas beat Herbert Flam. 1-6, 9-7, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3; Sedgman beat Trabert. 3-8, 6-2. 7-5. 3-6. 6-3; Larsen beat Mulloy, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. Women's singles: quarter-finals. Miss Doris Hart beat Miss Nanrv Chaffee, 6-2, 6-4; Mrs Jean Walker-Smith beat Mrs Madga Rurac, 6-2, 6-3: Miss Shirlev Fry beat Miss Kay Tuckv (Britain), 9-7. 3-6. 6-2: Miss Maureen Connolly beat Miss Jean Quertier (Britain), 6-3. 6-3. Combined doubles: fourth round, Charles Hare and Miss Jean Quertier beat Straight Clark and Miss Beverly Baker, 6-4. 6-4. Quarter-final: William Talbert and Mrs Patricia Todd beat Don Candv and Miss Althea Gibson, 6-0, 3-6, 9-7. Semi-final: Frank Sedgman and Miss Doris Hart beat Charles Hare and Miss Jean Quertier, 6-4, 6-2.
