CHANCE OF WAR WITH SOVIET
VIEW OF MARSHAL TITO (Rec. 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Sept. 1. The Presidential adviser (Mr Averell Harriman) to-day said that Marshal Tito believed that a world war would break out only as a result of the Kremlin’s miscalculation of the West.
Mr Harriman, who has returned to the United States from Persia, Jugoslavia, France and Britain quoted Marshal > Tito as having stated that Mr Stalin did not wish to become involved in a general war. Marshal Tito thought that Mr Stalin wanted only to apply pressure in soft areas.
Mr Harriman also said that'the failure to settle the explosive Persian oil dispute would lead to grim consequences, but he saw no reason why the issue could not be resolved. An amicable outcome was critically needed, he said, because Persia presented a fertile field for Communist infiltration.
