NATIVE BOYS’ TOUR

VISIT TO SOUTH ISLAND

A party of eight boys from Samoa, the Cook Islands and Niue Island, who are studying at New Zealand secondary schools, have been spending part of their holidays on an educational tour in the South Island, under Mr A. L>,> Lewis, who is in charge of the Auckland office of the Island Territories Department. The boys between the ages of 15 and 18 years, have all spent between three and four years in New Zealand under scholarships granted by island administrations. They are studying to return to their islands in a professional capacity or as tradesmen. Where the boys have made good progress in their studies they are rewarded with a trip round a part of New Zealand

With the exception of two boys from St. Andrew’s College, all the boys in Mr Lewis’s party are attending North Island schools. The party, which landed in the South Island at Picton, visited the Fox Glacier, saw open-cast coal mining, gold dredging and timber millihg on the West Coast. They then came to Christchurch where they visited several factories and yesterday afternoon were shown over Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. Last evening they left the South Island by steamer express and will spend the remainder of their holidays at the Boys’ Institute camp at Waikanae.
