NEW BRITISH BOMBER
“QUITE FANTASTIC” PERFORMANCE
LONDON, August 29. Britain’s first four-iet bomber has been ordered in quantity for the Royal Air Force. It is the Vickers Valiant, which flew for the first time in May. It has a swept-back wing mounted high in the fuselage, a radical change in wing design for British bombers, which was developed after exhaustive research. The Valiant has four Rolls-Royce Avon jet engines housed completely within the wing. It has a tricycle undercarriage with the wheels mounted in pairs. Secrecy veils its speed, weight and dimensions, but it will fly in public for the first time next month. The “Daily Herald” says that details disclosed by the Air Ministry to-night reveal that the Vickers Valiant will give Britain a clear lead over all other nations in weapons of air warfare. Test pilots say that the Valiant’s performance is “quite fantastic.” Her four engines combined develop more than 10.000 h.p.
