MR YOSHIDA ON TREATY
“MAGNANIMOUS AND FAIR” TOKYO, August 28. The Japanese Prime Minister (Mr Shigeru Yoshida) to-day praised the United States for a “fair and magnanimous peace treaty unparalleled in history." Speaking at a meeting of the JapanAmerican Society held to honour the Prime Minister and other delegates going to the San Francisco conference, Mr Yoshida said: "After six years of Allied occupation we are being called to a peace conference. There should be nothing pleasant about us. We ought to be rather dejected and bowed down. Yet a joyful and even festive mood is evident throughout our land, It is because we are going to sign a peace treaty which contains no punitive or vindictive clauses, but which promises us a place of honour in the society of nations.”
