SMUGGLING OF POTATOES
SYDNEY, August 27. More than 1000 bags of potatoes from Victoria sold at Sydney markets to-day had been smuggled over the border in definance of a direction by the Victorian Potato Marketing Board that no potatoes should be permitted to leave Victoria, Last week 3800 bags consigned to Sydney were seized by the Victoria Railway Department and the Victorian Government has banned road transport of potatoes without a special permit on pain of a penalty of £5OO. Bags containings 1501 b of potatoes were sold at £4 to £4 10s each.
