TRADING BEHIND IRON CURTAIN

New Powers Given Mr Truman

(Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 28The United States Senate to-day passed a bill giving Mr Truman discretionary authority to halt United States aid to nations trading behind the Iron Curtain.

It would cut off all help to countries shipping military materials to Russia and her satellites, but Mr Truman would be able to sanction other trading when it appeared that tho free world might gain strength from such an exchange of goods. Sixteen Republicans voted against the measure which goes to a conference for adjustments, with similar legislation passed by the House of Representatives.

The Government apparently intends to use the new bill in place of the socalled Kem amendment which called for a stricter ban on trading with Communist nations.
