CLASHES NORTH OF YANGGU
ALLIED SHIPS SHELL SUPPLY LINES
(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) TOKYO, August 2t A high United Nktiohs officer said to-day that CommUhiSt patrols north of kanggu, on the east central front in Korea, were the type df feeler assaults that usually preceded a general attack.
He described the situation on the eastern front as very uncertain. Correspondents report that the Communists are still reinforcing their drive against a ridgelihe above Vanggu, in spite of heavy losses all day yesterday. Apparently two battalions were Committed—one in a frontal assault, and the other in an enveloping attack. It is understood that small North Korean groups infiltrated behind the Allied lines north of Inje, Which is South-east Of Yahggu. The Bth Army reported to-day that the Communists had secured a slight penetration aboVe Yahggu yesterday. Heavy fighting continued throughout the day. A United Nations counterattack was making limited gains late last night. Allied Warships on Saturday bombarded Communist supply lines and installations between Chongjin and Songjin, on the east coast. On the West coast, the New Zealand frigate Rotoiti and other Allied warships laid doWh bombardments.
