CHILD STRANGLES IN HOSPITAL

TAPES TWISTED ROUND NECK (New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND. July 4. ; A four-year-old child was Strangled in his cot in the Middlemore Public Hospital one night during April. Tapes which had been tied to prevent his falling twisted round the child’s neck. This was revealed at an inquest at Otahuhu yesterday, into the death of Neil William Lewis, of Beachlands. The Coroner (Mr L. Fisher) returned a verdict of death by strangulation. Nurse Patricia Linkhorn said that the boy was found sitting on the side of his cot with a leg on each side of the bar. Because the cot Was against a balustrade with a sft drop below, she feared he might fall. She put a restrainer—a light calico sleeveless jacket—on the child and tied the tapes to each side of the cot. Two other nurses said in evidence, that the boy was sleeping quietly during the night. Nurse Kenny said that when she went to wash the child at 4.15 a.m. she found one of the tapes of the restrainer wound about his neck and the child was cold. He was later found to be dead. FATAL FALL FROM TRUCK FARMER DIES OF INJURIES (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 4. A man who fractured his skull when he fell from the back of a truck near Maungatawhiri on Monday evening died in the Middlemore Public Hospital this morning. He was Charles Stewart Pendergrast, aged 34. Mr Pendergrast. who was single, farmed at Maungatawhiri. MOTOR-CYCLIST INJURED Mr Owen Smith, of 11 Lyndoft street, was injured when the motor-cycle he was riding ran into a stationary truck in Rattray street about 7 o’clock last evening. Mr Smith was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital. His condition is reported to be satisfactory. TRUCK AND TRAM IN COLLISION The driver of a heavy truck, Mr K. Hope, and a tramway motorman, Mr J. Lightfoot, suffered slight injuries and were treated as out-patients at the Christchurch Public Hospital, after the truck and the tram were.involved in a collision at the corner of the Main South road and Watts road about 8.30 a.m. yesterday. No passengers in the tram were injured, but some were shaken. The force of the impact rolled the truck over on its side and the driver’s compartment of the tram was badly damaged.
