MISS BAKER BEATS MRS DUPONT FOUR U.S. PLAYERS REACH WOMEN’S SEMI-FINAL (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. July 3. Miss Beverley Baker, the 21-year-<>ld ambidextrous Californian player, cieated a surprise at Wimbledon to-day when she beat the United States champion, Mrs Margaret Dupont, in the quarter-final o< the womens singles. Mrs Dupont won the Wimbledon title in 1947, and was beaten in the final last year. Miss Baker used her two-handed forehand drives with such devastating effect that she soundly beat Mrs Dupont, who used every shot she had without avail. Miss Baker will now meet in the semifinal the American, Miss Doris Hart, favpurite to take the title from Miss Louise plough, whose semi-final opponent is Miss Shirley Fry. Miss Fry won the French title last month.

, The two remaining Englishwomen in the women’s singles made a gallant but vain fight to-day to prevent an allAmerican competition.
