GREAT BID AT TRENTHAM

LEG INJURY GIVING TROUBLE "Ths Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, July 4. Great Bid. a fancied South Island candidate for hurdles events at the Wellington meeting, missed several days’ work before he was brought to the North island, because one of his hind legs filled. He was restricted to pace work in the centre of the course at Trentham this morning, and moved tenderly. Great Bid was the leading hurdler at the Dunedin meeting, winning the Otago and June Hurdles. It is doubtful if he can be at his best for the Trentham Hurdles on Saturday. There were only two schooling bouts at this morning. Fairhome (Ih Anderson) gave his usual polished exhibition over six hurdles in the centre of the course. He looks in solid condi. tion, but has been racing disappointingly. Blank Cheque (R. J. Auckram) gave a moderate display over four hurdles. Zealander, one of the early fancies for the Wellington Steeplechase, was kicked in the ribs and also suffered a slight stifle injury at Timaru on Saturday, when lie contested the principal flat event. He has recovered completely. He took no ill-effects from the air trip from Harewood, and looks in solid condition. He will school over country in company with Springwater and Royal Dollar to-morrow. Mr Thunder arrived at Trentham on Tuesday, and will also school over country to-morrow. He was troubled by a slight filling in his off hind leg after his fall in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase, but the injury is responding to treatment. Great Bid was accompanied north by Formation, which will have his first race at the meeting in the Parliamentary Handicap on the second day. At his last start he won the Provincial Handicap, of one mile and three furlongs, at Dunedin on June 4.

My Hero is an unlikely runner in the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday, and his stablemate, Robin’s Song, will not contest the Vittoria Hack Hurdles.
