BEACH CAR RACING CHAMPIONSHIP

NORTH ISLAND TITLE TO G. SMITH ’

I dew Zeal and Press Association/ AUCKLAND. April 15. George Smith, of Auckland, won the North Island beach car racing championship at Muriwai Beach on Saturday with his own G.C:S. Special. Although Smith was the only contestant to finish, F. Zambucka (De Soto Special), also of Auckland, pressed him strongly until the last lap. The time for the 50 miles was 44min s.4sec.

Only four cars started in the event. Smith took the lead straight away and held his place right up to the end. The first driver to retire was L. Powell, of Auckland, whose car gave i.im trouble during the fifth lap. Smith and Zambucka steadily drew away from the \ el ling ton entry, J. McMillan f s rear-engiped special. After nearly 35 miles had been run, McMillan ran into the incoming water and was forced to withdraw In the next lap. An early tide cut the programme short, and the last two races had to be abandoned. In the open championships, the water covered the north peg before the race was over, and troubled competitors.
