DECK BOY FINED FOR ASSAULT

Francis William Ahearne, aged 18, a deck boy, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court at Lyttelton yesterday, before Messrs W. T. Lester and F H Heal, Justices of the Peace, with having assaulted Eric John Ray, a ship’s apprentice. He pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant J. L. Graham said that the two youths were members of the crew of the overseas ship Lochybank. On Tuesday, when some of the crew refused to move some cargo in one of the holds, some of the officers and Ray did so. Later, Ahearne met Ray in a passage and blocked his way. He struck Ray over one eye and lip, butted him with his head and called him an offensive name. When two officers went to the assistance of Ray, Ahearne called them the same name and later used the word to the Police when they went aboard the ship. The Bench told Ahearne that he could be dealt with severely for the offence. They would take into account his youth and convict and fine him £3.
