MICKLE MEMORIAL GATES

Sir,—Regarding the Dr. A. F. J. Mickle gates to Hagley Park entrance in Armagh street, as the only relative of the late doctor I am continually being asked why the gates have not been erected. It is 15 years next month since, by the will of the doctor’s widow, Mrs a. M. E. Mickle, £lOOO was bequeathed for the above purpose. The public would like an explanation for the long years of delay and would like to knowdf this sum is lying “wrapped in a napkin,” or is earning compound interest Perhaps the trustees may throw some light on the financial side. I might have sheltered behind such a nom de plume as “Pro Bono Publico," but I am not afraid to come into the open and sign my own name.—Yours, etc., PAUL A. D. MICKLE. April 5, 1951. [“The council did not assume control of the domain until the end of 1946,” said the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) commenting on this letter. “The terms of the bequest apparently provide that the sum shall not be paid over until all accounts, etc., are submitted to the trustees, so that no funds have yet been paid to the council. In June, 1950, the council approached the solicitors for the trustees for information as to the amount available and was advised that the bequest did not bear interest. This aspect of the matter is being discussed between the council’s solicitors and the testator’s solicitors and the gates will be proceeded with as soon as definite information is to hand concerning the amount available.”]
