GAS TO-DAY IN AUCKLAND
LIMITED SUPPLY TO HOMES HARBOUR BOARD MEN WORK CRANES (New Zealand Press Association) ~ AUCKLAND. March 12. Developments in Auckland during the day in the waterfront dispute were: Gas.—Deliveries of coal from the Kaitangata will, it is hoped, provide a gas supply from 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. to-morrow. The collier's cargo will enable the works to supply gas for three meal periods only each day for 17 days, but none wifi be available outside these hours for homes or. industry. Half the Auckland Gas Company’s retort house workers were dismissed to-day for walking otit or for refusing duty. After the workers had walked out the secretary of the union, Mr J. Kane, tendered his resignation “for strictly personal reasons.” Mr Kane has been secretary for six years.
Harbour workers.—By a majority of slightly more than four to one the Auckland brandh of the Harbour Board's Employees’ Union decided by a secret ballot to handle commodities essential to the community. Crane drivers discharged coal from the Kaitangata during the afternoon. Cool store employees.—Workers in the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company’s cool stores decided by 50 votes to 40 to maintain their refusal to work while servicemen are handling butter.
