ST. DAVID’S DAY
CELEBRATIONS HELD IN CHRISTCHURCH
St. David’s Day was celebrated on Saturday by members and friendsol the Christchurch Welsh Society. The president (Mr R. Wynne-Owen) welcomed visitors from all over New Zealand and from overseas, and conveyed greetings from kindred societies, the Union of Welsh Societies in Wales, Mrs Jones-Brock (Wales) and the Rev. D. R. Hay. A feature of the evening was the number of items given in the Welsh tongue. An address on “The Spirit of Wales” was given by Mr Wynne-Owen. The celebrations were concluded with a Welsh song service. The service was conducted by Mr R. J. Roberts (Hornby) and the preacher was the Rev. F. O. Prosser. The soloist was Mrs May Baker, an Eisteddfod winner. . . The Very Rev. D. J. Davies, Dean of Wellington, preached the sermon at the Cambrian Society’s annual Welsh service in commemoration of the Feast of St. David at the Christchurch Cathedral. Reference was made by Dean Davies in his sermon, and by the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. A. K. Warren) in prayers, to the centennial of Canterbury. The Dean of Christchurch conducted the service. ■ Hymns were sung alternately m the Welsh tongue and English and the lessons were read in Welsh by Messrs W. J. Roberts and R. H. Williams. Mr Ernest Rogers sang a solo, and the Cambrian Society's choir, under Mr J. Gwilym Parry, accompanied the singing of the hymns. The organist was Mr Bernard Bicknell
