IMPORT CONTROL

LICENCES NEEDED FOR GOODS UNDER REVIEW

(New Zealana Press AssociationJ WELLINGTON. March 3. Firms which order and import goods still subject to import licensing without first procuring a licence risk the penalties under the law, said the Minister in charge of Import Licensing (Mr J. T. Watts). His attention had been drawn to the fact that some firms were ordering goods included in the Board of Trade List No. 1 of items set down for review as to import control he said. . „ . The board’s notice, dated February 14, 1951. which was widely published, stated that the notice did not justify any assumption that any item on the list would be exempted from the need for a licence, or that any such goods ordered without a licence would be permitted to be imported. "As already announced,” said Mr Watts, “it is the intention of the Board of Trade to review the Items remaining subject to import licenring as quickly as practicable, and lists of such items will be published from time to time. Until any objections have been considered after the issue of these lists, it is not possible to say if or when particular items will be decontrolled. If goods are imported without a licence in respect of an item which remains subject to licensing, it is proposed to enforce the penalties provided under the law.
