PROTEST BY POWER BOARD
TRAVELLING ALLOWANCE PAYMENT (New Zealand Press Association) DARGAVILLE, January 12. Objections to the Audit Department’s refusal to allow the North Auckland Power Board to pay members a travelling allowance of M a mile were voiced by members at the board’s meeting in Dargaville yesterday. The secretary (Mr S. P. Day) was instructed to take the matter up with the appropriate Minister. The department’s letter claimed that such a fee would be out of line with the allowances paid to other local body members. It quoted allowances made to hospital board members who were on a sliding scale with a maximum of 7d and county council members who received 8d a mile. Mr J. C. McKay said that he was quite sure he was not going to take his car any distance on board business if he was paid only 8d a mile. Northland’s roads were frightful, and the wear and tear on a member’s car was tremendous.
