SOUTH ISLAND BOWLS TOURNEY

Many Surprises In Rinks

Section

Sixteen rinks were left in the South Island centennial bowling tournament after two rounds of post-section play yesterday. Forty rinks played in the first round, and another 12 had byes. Three games in the pairs section were also played and five pairs now remain in—all with one life. The only two lifer, B. O. Priddis (Christchurch Returned Services’ Association), lost both lives in his games yesterday. There were many surprises in the rinks play. Three of the six skips who gained the possible eight wins in section play were beaten in the first round, and the other three were beaten in the second round.

Play was held in ideal conditions. The four rinks were playing very rapidly. A good drawing game was played by W. Britten (Sydenham) and H. H. Gibbons (Barrington). Gibbons led 11-5 after the eleventh end, but Britten evened the scores on the sixteenth end and then went on to lead 22-17 after the twentythird end. A three on the twenty-fourth by Gibbons left him requiring another three to win. His only chance was to play a draw shot and trail kitty for four, but he missed kitty by the narrowest of margins. A. G. Linn (Opoho) and R. C. H. Madsen (Opawa) had an interesting and close game. The scores see-sawed throughout, with no more than two points’ difference. With the last head to play they had each scored 25. Linn was lying shot early in the head, but one of his men turned an Opawa bowl in for shot. Linn’s third rested it through, and Madsen with his first bowl turned another in to make Linn two up. Madsen tried an up shot and missed.

Britten and Linn had a great struggle in the second round. On the fifteenth head Britten was leading 17-13, but he did not score again until the twentysecond head, where he got a four. On the twenty-third head Linn scored two to lead 27-21. Britten . got two on the twenty-fourth end and required five to win. Linn was lying three shots on the last head, but Britten with an up shot took Linn’s three out and lay three himself. Britten had one bowl left and had to draw the shot to tie. He made a good attempt, but was a little too wide. J. R. Paterson (West Harbour) played excellently to eliminate C. L. A. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.) 28-19. Spearman started well to lead 6-0 after five ends, but Paterson scored 20 points on the next 10 heads, while Spearman scored none, to lead 20-6. Paterson kept his lead to win comfortably. W. H. Hampton (Naenae) continued to play excellently to beat the Amberley rink skipped by J. Findlay 33-7. Hampton beat Paterson 25-22 in the Second round. Hampton started brilliantly and led 18-1 after the ninth head. On the next four heads Paterson scored 10. and another great run from the fifteenth to the twentieth head brought the scores level, 21-all. On the last head Paterson required five to win. Early in the head he was lying three, but Hampton s third took the three out with one bowl and left Hampton with two shots. Hampton with his last bowl drew a perfect shot six inches from kitty. Paterson then drove kitty into the ditch, but got only one point. Mulligan Beats Fox “ / ood dra * in » Bame between two skips of equal ability, E. J. On the twentytnlrd end Bond was lying two shots, but B«nd n^»d d PUt t , he . ki ‘ty into the ditch “°" d h a d a one sllot at the end of the ditch and drew another to lie two. Ravenwood with a superb shot drew his last bowl to within inches of the ditch to win the head by one. He followed this with six. on the twenty-fourth to level the h»°H es ; and t !?^ n scored one on the last head to win the game.

Efford', Successes W Efford (Edgeware) played excelr 1° have a comfortable win over W. Bestey (New Brighton) in the first round, the game finishing on the twentvfourth end. Besley won the first end with a one, but was not in the lead again Efford beat Ravenwood by one point in the second round. Ravenwood led 14-2 ?£•!. J enth €nd ’ but str uck a bad patch. With first-class support from his rink Efford continued to score steadily Ravenwood wanted three to tie on the last end but scored only two. Six ends were burnt in this match. The bowls was of a particularly high standard and was followed by a large crowd.

P. A. Austin (Balmacewan) played well to have two comfortable victories. In the first round he beat B. E. Usshcr (Fendalton) 28-10, and in the second round led all the way to beat J. O. Thompson (Shirley), 27-13.

G. Craig (Sheffield) has yet to be beaten in the rinks championship. He qualified with the possible eight wins in section play and had two more good wins yesterday. In his game against J. Coxall (Hokitika) he was three ahead after the twenty-fourth head and scored another two on the last head. Craig was not troubled to win his game against R. Black (Rangiora). 29-15. E. Pascoe (Blackball) beat H. Stoneman (Sumner) on the last end. The game was very close throughout, with excellent drawing by both teams. Pascoe was two down at the twenty-fourth end. but scored three on the last end. Stoneman is one of the last five still in the pairs. J. Bowden (Sydenham) held a slight lead over A. L. Mulligan (Christchurch R.S.A.) throughout their game. Mulligan fought hard but could not bridge the gap, failing by one to draw on the twentyfifth end.

The game between Bowden and Pascoe see-sawed, each rink winning manyheads in succession. Pascoe was six up on the first four ends and Bowden eight up on the next five. Pascoe scored 11 on the next five ends. On the eighteenth end Bowden was down 12-21, but he then scored 10 on the next seven ends while Pascoe scored one, and the score was 22all on the twenty-fifth end. Bowden won on the extra end.

The game between G. E. Bennett (Linwood) and R. Bowman (Runanga) was very even, with some very fine drawing by both teams. Bennett led 19-18 on the nineteenth end. Bowman then scored eight

on the next three ends. Bennett scored six on the last three, leaving Bowman the winner by one. T. S. Edmonds (St Albans) was down 5-14 on the thirteenth end against P. J. Gaffney (Canterbury). A five to Edmonds on the fourteenth reduced the lead, but he was still five behind on the twentieth. He draw all square, 19-all, on the twentyfourth. At the change-over Gaffney held shot, but Edmonds drew a toucher with his last bowl. Gaffney failed to draw It off with his last bowl. Edmonds won by one. Henry Unbeaten Excellent play was seen in the game between R. Henry (Sydenham) and L. Hunt (Elmwood). Henry had an advantage on the fourteenth end, leading 15-10. Hunt scored a five on the seventeenth to take the lead 18-15. Both teams fought hard and were all square on the twentyfirst, 20-all. They were all square again 22-aIl, on the twenty-fourth. Henry won the last end by three. W. Campbell (Beckenham) played well to win on the last head from F. G. Barritt (New Brighton). Campbell was down 11-22 on the thirteenth end and nine behind on the twenty-second end. Interest rose high in the game when Campbell scored five on the twenty-third end, and followed this with a four on the twentyfourth, to draw level. A one on the last end gave Campbell the win. A. M. Hollander (Elmwood) led T. H. Watts (Beckenham) 18-10 on the fifteenth end and increased his lead on the twentyfirst to 26-14. A five to Watts on the twenty-second reduced the lead. Hollander scored one on the twenty-third and Watts scored five on the last two ends, Hollander winning by four. Two-lifer Eliminated B O. Priddis (Christchurch R.S.A.), the onlv two-lifer left in the pairs, was eliminated. In his second game he was beaten by A. S. Watkins (Christchurch). Watkins and his lead, D. G.
