FIGHT FOR KOREA

More Troops Landed (Rec. 12.45 a.m.) SEOUL, Nov. 8. Elements of the United States 3rd Division have been landed at Wnsan, on Korea's east coast, to he?i> to meet th* danger of the Chinese Communist intervention in the Korsan war, it was announced to-day.

The 3rd Division sailed recently from the United States,- and had b"en held in reserve in Japan. . North Korean communique broadcast last night by the Sinuiju radio claimed that Communist forces had crossed the Chongchon river north-east of Anju and were advancing southward

United States sth Air Force headquarters announced that an American jet fighter shot down a Russian-type jet plane over North Korea to-day. Another Russian-type jet was damaged in the same fight, but managed to escape across the Manchurian border. Reuter’s correspondent said that United Nations troops in north-west Korea fought off light Communist attacks early yesterday, but still had not established contact with the main body of enemy troops which unexpectedly drew back on Monuay night.

It appeared that the Communists were regrouping about 10 or 12 miles north of the Chongchon river to prepare for another assault on the United Nations troops defending the Anju bridgehead over the river, the gateway to Pyongyang. Observers in Seoul said that the United Nations forces would now attempt to regain the initiative which they lost in the past week. A defence line had now been established and the danger of being outflanked seemed past.

General MacArthur’s spokesman said that according to the North Korean radio. 25,000 Chinese had crossed the Manchurian border to “participate in the patriotic demonstration” in Korea. The broadcast said that 3000 more were on the way. The spokesman said that the Chinese Communist troops had been met in positions in line with Peiping’s declared plan to keep the Yaul river power plants out of United Nations hands.
