FORMER RESIDENTS OF NEW ZEALAND
VISITS BY MRS ALG AR WILLIAMS
News of Lord* Newell, a former Governor-General of New Zealand, Lady Newall and their family was brought to Christchurch by Mrs Algar williams, who returned to the Dominion in the Rangitoto this week, after an absence of 16 months. Mrs Williams stayed with Lord and Lady Newall at their home. Walton Leigh, Surrev. They are in good health, although Lord Newall recently had trouble with his eyes, but their condition has now improved. Miss Diana Newall is working in the Foreign Office; her elder sister. Miss Georgiana Newall, is greatly interested in horses and is working among them on a friend’s property in Lincolnshire. The only son of the family is attending Sandhurst Military follege. Another former Governor-General and his wife whom Mrs Williams visited were Sir Charles and the Lady Alice Fergusson, and she paid two visits to Kelburn Castle, Fairlie, Ayrshire, the home of Lord and Lady Glasgow. Lord Glasgow is a brother of the Lady Alice Fergusson. and he and his wife made many friends in New Zealand during the 1914-18 war when he served as a captain in the Royal Navy and his wife lived at “The Grange” in Wellington. Lord Glasgow’s mother was a member of the Hunter-Blair family, which has connexions in Canterbury. Living in a flat quite close to that occupied in London by JVfts Williams, was the Christchurch writer, Miss Ngaio Marsh, who is busy with dramatic undertakings. She mentioned to Mrj Williams that she will probably visit New Zealand very soon. Miss Rosemary Clark-Hall, of Christchurch, is doing secretarial work for Miss Marsh.
