RECEPTION TO MR BOWLES
CIVIC MUSIC COUNCIL’S ' TRIBUTE
Mr Michael Bowles, conductor of the National Orchestra, was guest of honour at\a reception given yesterday by the Christchurch Civic Music Council. Mr J. L. Hay, Mr Ernest Empson, Mr Victor Pfeters, and Professor Vernon Griffiths praised his work and that of the orchestra, which, they said, was giving satisfaction everywhere. Difficulties ih securing replacements in the orchestra were mentioned by Mr Bowles during his reply. Some source of reserves was essential, as the orchestra was not in a position' to train new members, he said. Establishment of a conservatorium had been mentioned. He did not know yet the implications of such a proposal in New Zealand. freshness of the orchestra made it pleasant to work with, and this approach was very good for a country such as New Zealand. Mementoes of the reception were presented to Mr and Mrs Bowles.
