RANFURLY SHIELD

ARRANGEMENTS FOR NORTHLAND GAME

TWO OTHER CHALLENGES RECEIVED From Our Qwn Reporter TIMARU, September 18. The South Canterbury Rugby Union received advice from' the Northland Union to-day that it was willing to play a Ranfurly Shield challenge match at Timaru on September 30. The South Canterbury Union has already received many hundreds of inquiries from persons wishing to book seats for the match. The Northland team will arrive in Timaru on the Thursday before the match.

It is not known whether the match between South Canterbury and Northland is a special challenge. If it is the South Canterbury Union will be obliged to pay the visitors half the net gate or meet the steamer, rail, and hotel expenses. Northland had placed a special challenge against Otago. When the shield went to Canterbury, Canterbury did not accept the challenge, and before the question could be decided the shield went north. The question will be discussed at a meeting of the South Canterbury Rugby Union to-morrow evening. The South Canterbury Union has received shield challenges from West Coast and Buller, but it is unlikely that these will be accepted. The Bulger Union suggested that if its challenge was accepted the match be played on the Wednesday before the northland-South Canterbury before the Northland-South Canterbury On Saturday, South Canterbury will play Otago at Timaru. This match was to have been played last Saturday, but Otago agreed to postpone it until this week, though six of their players will be taking part in the North Island-South Island match. South Canterbury has no representative in the South Island team. The South Canterbury Union has received telegrams of congratulation from all over. New Zealand. SHIELD ’RULES N.Z. UNION TAKES LEGAL OPINION (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 18. “I think it is a pity that the laws of the sport have to be the subject of legal inerpretation,” said Mr J. H. Parker after an interpretation of the Ranfurly Shield laws had been read at a meeting to-day of the executive committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union. He said that he was not questioning the correctness of the interpretation, but bodies administering the sport observed the laws as they operated in practice. The legal interpretation of Rule 10 is that any challenge, which includes special challenges, must pass on to the new holder of the shield, but there is nothing in the rules to say that the new holder must accept the financial arrangements made for a special challenge by the previous holder. The chairman (Mr A. St. C. Belcher) said that the proper procedure was for the council of the New Zealand Union to examine the rules and put forward notices of motion, which would give delegates at the annual meeting an opportunity for clarifying any points. One would be certain to be special challenges and the financial obligations involved. As Wairarapa had announced its intention not to play any shield challenges, it was decided to reply to its protest that it had not been consulted before being ordered to play South Canterbury by advising that the protest was not m order. Mr Belcher said that the executive’s interpretation was that a dispute had been created in that there were challenges and Wairarapa had announced its intention not to play.' The laws laid it down that the executive had power to decide where there was a dispute. POSSIBLE CHALLENGE BY BULLER From Our Own Reporter WESTPORT. September 18. Although the Buller Rugby Union decided at its weekly meeting on Saturday evening to issue a special challenge to South Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield, the match to be played on Wednesday, September 27, it is expected that a ruling will be sought from the New Zealand Union on the question. Buller hopes to play at Timaru on the Wednesday, and play its match with Canterbury three days later at Lancaster Park. In the event of Buller winning the shield North Auckland, which has been granted the right of challenge by the parent body, would not get a game this season, as no matches for the shield are allowed after September 30, and Buller already has a match arranged on that date. Under these circumstances Buller may forgo any rights to challenge this season. SOUTH CANTERBURY TEAM TO PLAY OTAGO From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, September 18.
