LYTTELTON NEWS

COUNCIL DECISION ON WAR MEMORIALS Two proposed war memorials in the Lyttelton borough were approved by the Lyttelton Borough Council at its meeting last night. One, for the town of Lyttelton, was the proposal of the Lyttelton Returned Services’ Association for memorial gates to be erected at the recreation ground near Erskine Point. The other, a memorial for Diamond Harbour only, and which will carry a subsidy authorised by the Government, will be a community centre hall at Diamond Harbour. A report from the Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson) suggested that the Lyttelton Returned Services’ Association be informed that the council approved .of the erection of memorial gates at the recreation ground on the reclaimed area as being the war memorial for Lyttelton. A subsidy could not be claimed for the memorial gates alone, as they did not come within the category of memorials subject to subsidies. The association could claim a subsidy from other funds available. The memorial gates would be the war memorial for Lyttelton. The report further suggested that the Diamond Harbour Burgesses’ Association be informed that it could apply for a subsidy to enable it to erect a comumnity centre hall at Diamond Harbour as a war memorial for Diamond Harbour only. The association could include in its proposal an additional proposal to improve the recreation ground at Diamond Harbour. A deputation from the burgesses’ association told the council that it was proposed to erect a hall at a cost of £3OOO. The association hoped to Yaise half of this amount and proposed to apply to the Government for a £ for £ subsidy. After the deputation had withdrawn the report of the Town Clerk was adopted.
