FREIGHTER RUNS AGROUND

Total Loss Feared SYDNEY, September 6. The British freighter, Empire Gladstone, of 7000 tons, is hard aground on Haystack Rock, nine miles north of Eden and about 250 mjles south of Sydney. She is held firmly and is extensively holed. The Deputy-Director of Navigation (Captain Hooper) states that her plight is very serious and there is danger of ner becoming a total loss. According to latest reports her crew of 44 British seamen is still aboard. Although the freighter took a terrific pounding from seas during the night there is no immediate danger of her breaking up. She is stated to be close enough in for breeches buoys to be rigged from shore to ship in the event of an emergency. Shipping and salvage experts left bydney this afternoon in a chartered aircraft to examine the wreck and to determine whether any attempt will be made to tow the-vessel off. The Empire Gladstone left Whyalra a week ago with a cargo of motor-car bodies and iron ore and was due to berth in Sydney to-day.
