THE MAYORALTY

Sir, —Your correspondent. “Marie,” very pertinently asks why party politics should be brought into local government affairs. From the medley and its resultant babel, it has remained for a woman to give a clear pointer to clarity and reason. The opposites of these are certainly seen in the presence of the thing complained of. What is thought by some to be big and profound is often seen by onlookers to be petty and misplaced. To those under other local authorities, the existence of political partisanship is almost incredible. Not only does it, as “Marie” truly says, endanger the main issue, but goes far towards defeating the purpose for which local bodies exist. We who are free from such conditions desire to remain so, having no more use for them than we have for your civic centre.—Yours, etc., W. R. EARLY. Hornby, Sept. 6, 1950.

Sir, —By the tone he is adopting in his replies, it is quite evident that I have got E. Parlane in the corner of the political ring, in a very groggy state, and in his desperation to stage a come-back, it seems he is adopting Labour’s well-known technique of personal attack on anyone who dares to disagree with Socialist policy. It is this attitude that drives the reasonable and moderate worker away from Labour and which helped to give Labour the decisive knock-out blow last November. E. Par’ane still shows great anxiety to ascertain my name, and at the same time says he does not want to know who I am—very strange indeed. Is it that this information is desired so that the high-pressure victimisation police of the labour-socialists can be effectively applied.—Yours, etc.. A WORKER. September 6, 1950.
