WIDOWS’ PENSION
Sir, —My husband recently died and I received a full widow’s pension, after declaring all my assets. Now. six months after. I get a notice that as National Savings interest is now chargeable against my income, my pension is reduced to £6 10s a month. Is that the present Government’s idea of economy? If I were a, young woman I' could understand it, but being the widow o r a man who did his best in two world wars. I fail to appreciate it. My husband’s expectation of life was definitely shortened by his service. Is the present Government responsible for this new ruling, and why, if it wishes to help those who have always helped themselves?—Yours, etc..
NATIONAL SAVINGS. August 30. 1950.
[“The correspondent does not say whether she is a widow under 60 years with children under 16 years, or a widow over 60 years without dependent children,” said the actingregistrar of the Social Security Department at Christchurch (Mr J. P. Urquhart), when this letter was referred to him. “There is also a possibility that she is in receipt of a war widow’s pension. Therefore it is impossible to give a definite answer to the question. If (he writer calls at this office I will be pleased to discuss the matter with her.”]
