CIVIC MATTERS

Sir,—-As we are into our centennial year there are one or two matters I should have thought the City Council would have tidied up. One is the Bridge of Remembrance. This is long overdue for a scraoing to bring it back to its original white. Another matter is the Edmonds Band Rotunda. This also needs cleaning, the lights and ornamental flower pots restored, and the wall on the water’s edge cleaning. Why does the Tramway Board not see that the trams are kept clean? The buses get a wash down but the trams seem to be neglected. Nothing appears to be done to keep the outside fresh from one paint job to the next. There are plenty of cleansers on the market that could keep them in bright, clean condition. The Railway Department can give its carriages a wash down every week or so. Why can’t the Tramway Board do the same?— Yours, etc., J. F ALVEY. August 24, 1950. The general manager of the Christchurch Tramways (Mr J. F. FardelD declined to comment on the section of this letter relating to the washing of tfamcars. The letter was also referred to the town clerk (Mr H. S. Feast), who said that both the Edmonds band rotunda and the Bridge of Remembrance were to receive attention as soon as possible. “The work on the latter, however,” he said, “will be limited to minor repairs and the removal of moss. The scraping of the stone surface is not considered desirable, as it accelerates the deterioration of the stone. A mellow appearance is generally more appreciated, anyway.” /
