RAIL STRIKE IN VICTORIA

MELBOURNE, September 6. Strikes threaten to tie up all Melbourne suburban train services. The guards’ strike on goods trains has already disorganised country services, and road trucks are bringing sheep and lambs to Melbourne. Fruit and vegetables are already scarce in the city.

The suburban railway guards have now issued an ultimatum that unless the Railway Commissioners meet the terms of the striking goods train guards by to-day they also will take direct action.

The guards are striking as a protest against what they term excessive overtime.

Unionists at the Newport power station are also threatening to strike.
