RANFURLY SHIELD
Sir, —Canterbury people were pleased when their Rugby team won the Ranfurly Shield. Already some “pothunters” in the north are hot on the trail. It is difficult for players to lose working time during the week to defend the shield, after having lost time on the southern trip. It savours too much of introducing business into amateur sport. If Mr Morrison and his colleagues so desire to give North Auckland an opportunity to win the trophy, let them try to induce some of the other unions to forgo a game. It is possible*that Wairarapa (against a weakened Canterbury team) or Buller will successfully challenge this season, but if there is to be “pothunting,” with its consequent dissatisfaction, it would be bigger and better for Canterbury to ship the shield to the New Zealand Rugby Union and let it give it to whom it desires. —Yours, etc., OLD PLAYER. August 29, 1950.
