THE THEATRE
Sir-, —I feel I must reply to Mr Sherman’s letter published in “The Press” to-day. As chief engineer and resident stage manager of the Savoy Theatre for 12 years, a similar position at the London Coliseum for two years, technical adviser to the Arts Council of Great Britain, and technical representative at the British The-, atre Conference, I felt justified in criticising disparaging remarks against the British Repertory Theatre movement and our West End theatres, made by an' actor with a few months’ experience in Britain. Mr Sherman has avoided the main issue, and pounced on my statement that his opinion of Sir Richardson was an error of judgment. How could Mr Sherman, during his short visit home, busy with radio, television, screen, and stage, possibly find time to see performances by all our leading actors, form an opinion of their capabilities, and see productions in 45 West End theatres?—Yours, etc., ALEC BROWN. August 29, 1950.
