MODERNISATION OF TRAMWAYS
APPLICATION TO LOANS BOARD TWO OBJECTIONS MADE Without discussion, except on two objections, the Christchurch Tramway Beard, at a special meeting yesterday, decided to apply to the Local Governments Loans Board for sanction to the borrowing of £950.000 to modernise the tramway system. Both the ‘objections referred to the Northcote area of the Waimairi county where tramway rates are paid but no service provided. One was from the Waimairi County Council protesting that the rating in the area was inequitable. and the otner from Mr I. A. V 7. Chapman, who said that if the bcard'a proposals were adopted there would be an increased burden on ratepayers. "Sooner or later the service must be developed in that direction,” sa.d Mr C. C. Holland. “The Papanui tram service must be a great benefit to the area,” Mr H. A. C. North said. “There are other areas which could object in a similar way. I think they are adopting a very selfish attitude. I think they must just go on paying, and they will gel a service later. I Jive in the county and will probably be shot for saying this.’’ The objections will be forwarded to the Loans Board with the board's application for of the loan.
