TREATMENT OF MENTAL PATIENTS
Sir.—l cannot but admire the letter of "Protect .Your Own” whu-h appeared in “The Press” of April 26. .end a paragraph in Mr Heale’s letter of April 28 regarding modernisation in legal reforms. Why should some patients be allowed only a day out a week from Sunnyside Mental Hospital? Surely when patients are well enough the doctors should realise that to get away from the hospital is better for them than for them to remain indoors, or anywhere near the hospital. Of what use are the nresent official visitors to the hospital? They bring a packet of cigarettes, and a bag of sweets with them, and offer the patients one of each kind. It is humorous. Let us dispense with these official visitors and form a committee such as suggested in a letter by "Truth” some time ago to visit Sunnyside once a week, and let people free again, to enjoy life.—Yours, etc., WAKE UP NEW ZEALAND. May 13. 1950. [This correspondence is now closed.— Ed., “Th 6 Press.”]
