BRITISH FILM INDUSTRY
“ ENERGETIC MEASURES ” NEEDED LONDON, May 25. Most British films, even when reasonably successful at the box office, were not recovering costs, the Cinematograph J?ilms Council, which represents all sides of the industry, said in its annual report to-day. “It is obvious that this state of affairs cannot continue indefinitely, and if British production is to survive on a scale which we believe to be desirable, energetic measures must be taken forthwith to put the industry on a sounder economic basis.” It also reported that the general prospects for the industry are as uncertain as they were a year ago. The production of British first-feature films shows a steady decline, and employment in the main studios is at its lowest level since the industry got into full swing after the war. Washbrook Withdraws from English Team.—C. Washbrook, who pulled a • thigh muscle, has withdrawn from the English side which will meet the Rest on May 31.—London. May 25
