SLIPS ON WEST COAST ROADS

HEAVY RAIN AT GREYMOUTH From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, May 25. Heavy rain caused blocks on two highways to Westport late last evening. but most of the traffic was able to get through this morning. Large buses were expected to have difficulty in driving through the Buller gorge where slips have narrowed the roadway. It is believed that a cloudburst occurred a few miles north of Charleston late last evening. This morning the road surface was stripped down to bedrock. Some sections of road will have to be resurfaced.* It is reported that most damage of this nature occurred in the Addisons flat area. Two slips also occurred in the Charleston area during the night, including one at Gentle Annie creek. Neither was extensive and it took less than half an hour to clear them. This morning’s service car from Greymouth to Westport was diverted from the Coast road to go by way of Reefton and the Buller gorge. There was considerable road flooding near Cronadun. where the road was covered to a considerable depth by flood waters. In the Buller gorge there were three small slips and a washout. The bus was able to pass slowly by the slips, which did not entirely cpver the road. Between two and three inches of rain fell at Greymouth between 9 o’clock yesterday morning and this morning, but there was no damage apart from minor street flooding. At Karoro 2.09 inches of rain were registered and at the signal station, in the s’me time. 3.14 inches. There was a moderate fresh in the Grey river.
