POTATO MARKETING COUNCIL
BILL TO BE INTRODUCED THIS SESSION (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 25. Little in the way of major legislation affecting his department would be introduced during the coming session of Parliament, said the Minister of Agriculture (Mr K. J. Holyoake) yesterday. Minor bills to be brought forward included measures to revise the control of noxious weeds and the establishment of a Potato Marketing Council. There would also be a 'mall amendment to the Meat Board Act. Negotiations for the setting up of the Potato Marketing Council had been started under the Labour Government and he had recently discussed the provisions of the draft bill with interested parties. It was proposed that the growers and merchants would assume responsibility for the making of the contracts for the disposal of the main crop of potatoes. A small levy would be made on all potatoes grown under contract to enable the council to finance a scheme for a guaranteed price. It was hoped the new proposal would be put into effect for next season’s crop.
