WAGE RESTRAINTS OPPOSED
British Civil Service Conferences 350,000 WORKERS REPRESENTED LONDON. May 23. Nearly 350.000 British Government workers to-day staged an open revolt against the ruling of the Chancellor of the Exchequer ’Sir Stafford Cripps) that they shall have no wage rises this year. At three separate conferences, the workers’ delegates voted to press for immediate increases. Nearly 300 resolutions opposing wage-pegging appeared on the agenda of the Civil Service Clerical Association’s conference. The association has 150.000 members. The 1000 delegates to the conference cheered the resolutions, when they voted unanimously for full pressure to secure wage increases for all grades of their members. The conference censured 11 of its executive committee who had given support to the wage-freezing policy of the Government. The annual conference of the Union of Post Office Workers, which has 150.000 members, approved its executive’s support of wage-pegging during last year, but voted to oppose this policy in future. These moves to-day further built up pressure on the leaders of Britain's 8 Trades Union Congress to produce ouickly a modified wa?es policy which will give b?r»efit= to low-paid workers.
