MILITARY SERVICE POSTPONEMENT

APPEAL FOR APPRENTICE MOTOR MECHANIC

An appeal for indefinite postponement of service on behalf of Jack Chammen, an apprentice motor mechanic, was heard by the No. 14 Military Service Postponement Committee yesterday. The committee adjourned the appeal sine die. on the understanding that the Department of Labour and Employment brings it before the committee again about the end of October. The department is to keep in touch with Chammen's employer to see whether the recruit will be able to go into camp in January, 1951, or May, 1951. The members of the committee were Mr A. H. Cavell (chairman), Mr R. H. Webb (employers’ representative), and Mr J. S. Barr (employees’ representative). The Crown representative was Mr J. McKnight.

Leonard Timothy Kirton, a garage proprietor, said that Chammen was his only employee and he could not run the business without him. The garage \>as at the corner of Russley and Yaldhurst roads and if vehicle parts were needed they had to be obtained from Christchurch. This meant an absence from the garage of about two hours a day. and if Chammen had to go to camp there would then be no one to look after the business at such times. When a vehicle broke down on the road two persons wore needed to deal with it. If witness did not have Chammcn he would lose this work. Witness was also authorised to issue warrants of fitness and so someone had to be at the garage all the time.

To Mr Cavell: The recruit, who was aged 18. had also put in an appeal. Chammen volunteered for the Royal New Zealand Air Force but was not accepted.
