LYTTELTON NEWS

GROUND FOR BAND CONTEST

If a suitable ground can be obtained for the quickstep event, the next provincial brass bands contest will be held at Lyttelton in October. The borough council last evening received a letter from the Lyttelton Marine Band asking the council if it would provide gear and material for laying out an area at Officers’ Point. The band undertook to find voluntary labour for the work. Cr. A. M. Miller said the land was the property of the Railway Department and it would be necessary to obtain the consent of the department before anything could be done. The Mayor (Mr F, G. Briggs), Cr. W. Morris, and the Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson) were appointed a committee to report back to the council. Water for Waterfront Commission The question whether the Harbour Board should pay for water supplied, to a building used by the Waterfront Industry Commission was discussed by the council. The board had refused to pay. Under the terms of the original arrangement the council was given the right of laying mains on the wharves for the supply of water to shipping, in return for which water was to be supplied to the board free of charge. Councillors expressed the opinion that this should not apply to water supplied other than for the board’s purposes on the waterfront. The council decided to arrange for representatives to interview the board about the request for payment Watersiders’ Meeting A stop-work meeting lasting four hours was held by the Lyttelton branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union yesterday morning. An official statement was? made that the meeting had been called to receive reports from delegates who attended the biennial conference at Wellington in December. Diamond Harbour Valuations A meeting of ratepayers of Diamond Harbour on Saturday evening carried the following resolution: —“That this meeting registers a strong protest against 100 per cent, increase in valuations without any tangible public improvements having been effected in this suburb since the previous valuation.”
