ROMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
LEASE TO SECULAR AUTHORITIES OFFER BY CHURCH IN ENGLAND (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, November 5. Roman Catholics in England and Wales have offered to their 1500 schools to the secular authorities and give up their right to appoint teachers in return for the lifting of the “impossible burden” of at least £50,000 000 needed for building and reorganisation. The teachers will be subject to their approval as to religious belief, character and fitness, and religious education will go on unchanged. The proposals, which have been put before the Ministry of Education, are the climax to Catholic dissatisfaction with the settlement on Roman Catholic schools embodied in the Educational Act of 1944.
