N.S.W. SHORT OF PETROL
PUBLIC SERVICES THREATENED (Rec. 10 p.m,) SYDNEY. October 13. Though nominally petrol is still available on a free market, there is now a serious petrol shortage in New South Wales. Services of all kinds may have to be heavily curtailed unless fresh supplies are made- available within a few days. A crisis in the building industry, with widespread unemployment, is almost unavoidable, according to Mr Stewart Frazer, executive director of the Building Industry Congress. The secretary of the British Medical Association (Dr. J. G. Hunter) said that the petrol shortage might cause many doctors to cease visits. According to the City Engineer of Sydney, important construction and maintenance works are threatened. The secretary of the Service Stations’ Association <Mr J. D. Stewart) said to-day that most garages would have no petrol by the end of this month.
Petrol rationing will be reintroduced on November 15.
