GROCERY NOTES

Sugar supplies have improved somewhat over recent weeks, but will not be really satisfactory until the British sugar arrives. The first shipment is on its way to Lyttelton and, when it is delivered some time next month, ample supplies should be available for all ordinary and seasonable requirements. Ample stocks of golden syrup in 21b tins are available. A limited quantity of seedless raisins has arrived from South Africa, and it is possible that a shipment of seeded raisins may materialise from the same source. A big quantity of mixed dried fruits is expected from Australia within the next few weeks. The mixture contains Lexia raisins, which are at present in very short supply. With the tobacco and cigarette deliveries next Monday, two popular brands of cigarettes will come on to the market in packets of 20. It is likely that there will be a slightly increased allocation in one of these brands. Supplies of a plastic substitute for metal tops used for preserving jars are on the water, and should be to hand in ample time for the jam season. Sultanas.—Something altogether new to distributors of dried fruits is to receive offers of sultanas from Pakistan. Samples that have also come to hand are of good average quality. However, prices are high and, although there is a shortage of Australian fruit, it is not likely that import licences would be considered to bring in shipments from the new Glucose.—Due to import restrictions, very irregular shipments have been coming forward of a popular overseas pack of glucose. After a lapse of several months, further supplies have arrived, and a distribution now being made will be very acceptable. Another lot is expected early in the new year, and in the meantime prices are unchanged. Baked Beans.—Merchants are advised that the Hawke’s Bay packers of fruit and • vegetables are now canning baked beans in lloz and 16oz tins, and supplies from, this source can be expected toward the end of the month. The Christchurch market is at present well stocked with this commodity :n 16oz tins.
