“STACKING” OF HIGH COURT

AUSTRALIAN ALLEGATIONS DENIED

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) CANBERRA. Oct. 12. Suggestions that the Labour Party, if returned to power, would “stack” The High Court were wrong and wicked. said the Attorney-General (Dr. H. V. Evatt) in the Federal House of Representatives to-day.

Dr. Evat’ said That if one looked at what the Government had done, the statement was completely inaccurate and a complete untruth from beginning to end. Such a matter as “stacking” the Court had never been considered.

There had been only one vacancy on the High Court Bench in the eight years that the Labour Government had been in office, and the appointee had been the Chief Justice of Queensland, Sir William Webb.
