OCCUPATION OF JAPAN
BIG ACHIEVEMENTS CLAIMED (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 11. The Japanese worshipped General MacArthur as slavishly as they had formerly worshipped the Emperor Hirohito, said Dr. William Tolley, Chancellor of Syracuse University, today. Dr. Tolley recently toured Japan as a member of an educational survey team sponsored by the United States Army. Dr. Tolley said: “General MacArthur end his staff have done a magnificent job. The Americans have won the respect of the Japanese people, planted the seeds of peace and democracy, purged Japan’s war-time leaders, and have Communism on the run. “The Japanese worship everything American. They feel they now have few friends left in the world. We appear to them as their champions. We ought to capitalise on that.”
