MEDICAL CODE OF ETHICS
ADOPTION BY WORLD CONFERENCE (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON. October 12. Doctors of 42 nations have approved the first international code of medical ethics and standards of medical care. The code, among other things, holds that a doctor must not allow himself to be influenced merely by motives of profit, and says it is unethical to take part in any plan of medical care in which a doctor does not have complete professional independence.
The doctors, who were attending the World Medical Association Conference, referred the subject of abortions to a special committee.
An article of the code which said, “Therapeutic abortion may only be performed if the conscience'of the doctor and the national law permits.” was approved by such a small margin that the conference decided that the issue should be discussed further.
